::)On the way over to my house tonight, Kyle's K5 decided it was too tired to go any further...Blew a hub on the drivers side...or so we thought... Little did we know that the main nut on the spindle had backed out and the entire assembly (wheel, rotor) was being held on by the brake caliper...which would explain the extensive smoking at 5 MPH and the tires sitting like this /-----\ So, now his K5 Chevy is sitting in front of my house on jackstands...oh, and I'll get pictures in the morning... HAHAHAHAHAHHHAHA However, we did make alot of progress on Project Replicate tonight. Kyle's RC is coming along nicely and the body he bought turned out AWESOME... P.S. (Sorry Kyle, I had too...it was too funny) Hey Kyle....have you checked your nuts lately? ;D

Figures...get some dough to improve your rig and she decides she's tired and wants something else done. I'm telling you, vehicles have a mind of their own (kind of like women ;D ). Hope you get it back together soon Kyle, if you need any help, you know where to holler.

I'm gonna head over to James' this afternoon when I get out of school and start tearing it down. I have a feeling that either the spindle broke or as James said the nut backed off almost to the end and then stripped the rest of the way off. Never fails, get some cash for the rig and everything goes to hell ;D. I'll be sure to take plenty of pictures of the carnage when I tear it apart.

Ya, we checked the other side and everything seemed fine. I'm gonna replace the bearings on that side before the Chircaua run.

Well, got some bad news. When I stopped at the grocery store this morning I felt the new hub and it was so hot I could barely touch it. Not sure what is going on but I got back home and parked it. I don't really feel like tearing into it today so i'll probably do it tomorrow. If anyone has any ideas of what could be wrong please let me know.

Sounds to me like the bearings have too much preload on them. You guys did use a torque wrench on that, right?

Ummm...not really...I was thinking about this on the way home, and I'd have to agree Kyle...try backing everything off a nd re-tourqing it. But, we did the EXACT same process on the passenger side, and there is no problem.

True, but you weren't seating new bearings on the other side.

True, but you weren't seating new bearings on the other side. True.... I told Kyle before we started I was not real familiar with the entire spindle/bearing setup... I think its still repairable, just need to loosen and reset everything. right?

If it was my rig, I'd at least repack the bearings. If it got too hot to touch, then it's possible the bearings were smoke-checked and need to be replaced.

I think the bearings are ok. The hub wasn't unbelievably hot. It just was hotter than it should be. I'm just gonna back everything off and re-torque it.

All right, figured out what the problem was. The spot where the outer wheel bearing sits in the rotor was very worn. After I put in the bearing I could move it side to side about 1/2 an inch. This was causing the loose movement of the rotor and forcing me to tighten the nut too much to eliminate the slop. I should have a new rotor by wednesday.

Lemme know if you want some help. I've done my blazer numerous times. The inner spindle nut torque is only about 15 lbs. The outer is around 90 lbs. I even have a spare set of spindles if you need them. Sorry I didn't see this earlier. Auto Zone oughta have your rotor for about $30.
