But that changed today, thanks to the help of an army of volunteers. And what a difference today makes. Just to give you an idea of how much trash was in Redington Pass, volunteers filled several dumpsters and even had to make a few trips to the landfill. Posted: Saturday, March 10, 2007

Great job guys. Get a few more of these cleanup days going and we may yet make a huge difference on that road. Nice to hear that they're considering setting up a proper range, maybe it'll help encourage people to keep the area looking as nice as it should.

You all did a MAGNIFICANT job up there. It looked really great. When I came back down Sunday night, I was upset to see the shooters were trashing it out again. I probably shouldn't holler at people with guns either.

Ya they should shut the area down for shooting.I hate to say that about anything but that area is just silly with stupidity.Rights only go so far.

Did they say whether or not they were gonna shut the area down and enforce it and kick people out or are people still goin to be allowed to shoot out there and haul there trash back and blow it to pieces again?

What I heard from one of the Fish & Game guys was that they were looking at building a shooting range where they could actually have trash cans for people to use and keep the shooting localized to one area. They were waiting for some proposal and the deadline was supposedly close. If they didn't get what they wanted, they were going to put it out for bid. I think that would be the best thing for the area. Hate to say it, but I'd rather know where people are shooting that stumble on them somewhere on some remote trail and catch wind of a stray bullet.

I was told they would enforce the shut down when the new range gets bulit. They will always be some a hole shooting out there for a chance to get caught by a stray bullet so why allow them to thrash. It seems to be one everytime i go out.Not just in the tucson area.

Just wondering, did anyone try to come up to the area to go shooting and get out and say what the hell is going on and want to shoot, and then just take off when the fish and game said it was closed for those few hours???

One person was way up at the top cleaning when bullets went wizzing by his head, he was quite shaken up. Some guy had set up in between the 2 & 3 clean-up spot. The G & F officer asked him to leave and he was quite unhappy. No sooner had we left our spot, there was 4 or 5 cars there shooting and crap all over, Im hoping they picked it up but I wont hold my breath. Tons of people drove by no one stopped to ask or help!

I talked to the guys at the third spot before heading out and they seemed like they were going to pick up their stuff. Went up today and it looked like they had, but there was some other crap already up there. There are still a bunch of bags at the 1st area that need to get picked up, guess the Forest Circus guys didn't make it back w/ their trailer. Who can we talk to about that?

this was in the ARIZONA DAILY STAR online
Redington Pass ARIZONA DAILY STAR Tucson, Arizona | Published: 03.15.2007
About 100 volunteers on Saturday removed hundreds of bags of trash from three areas in Redington Pass, northeast of Tucson. Because recreational shooters like to use the areas for target practice, much of the debris was spent cartridges, said Heidi Schewel, a Forest Service spokeswoman.
Volunteers came from the Tucson Rod and Gun Club's hunters-education instruction group, which organized the cleanup; the Arizona Game and Fish Department; Air Force 356th Air Rescue Squadron; Tucson Off-Road Inc.; the Coues Whitetail Deer Society; and Forest Service. Anyone interested in participating in future cleanups should call Schewel at 749-8700.
