Hey Folks, Anyone who was at the M&G is well aware that I was INFATUATED with the RC rockcrawler that showed up out there...I've literally been losing sleep trying to design my own in my head...Well, I picked a stock TLT-1 from Skilzz66 last night, and its been a build since. I went out today and picked up materials for links, and suspension components. I custom built my 4 link to my own specifications (those are secret part).... I locked the differentials (yes, it actually has differentials with a ring and pinion and spider gears). I also installed 2.2" Moab's from Proline.... I also picked up a pre-painted used jeep body for it. I thought I'd post some pictures of the articulation. 12.5" wheelbase, and I can get a front or rear tire 7.5" off the ground before another tire lifts... which equals around 1900 on a 20* RTI ramp....(now I just need to build a scale ramp) Good stuff. Also, as you'll notice in the photos, I've set it up for rear steer... All thats left is to determine what kind of drivetrain I want to end up with, where to mount the battery packs (down low for low Center of gravity), and install some driveshafts, drop some weight in the tires, install a 110 TGear and a 38 T Pinion...........then we are ready for a RC comp.... Stack of Tires measure just over 7 3/8" tall. Here you can see just part of the custom 4 link I built. I went ahead and left the lower link mounts in the stock location...for now...we will see how it does...not hard to move those. A good photo showing the rear steer capabilities. Steering Servo Mount....Simple. Although I need to install servo savers on both and probably upgrade to stronger servos...

damn it James, now I want one ;D. I'll have to put the fuel injection on hold and funnel some money over to the RC department.

what was the original name of the truck? TLT-1 RockBuster? Yep.... If you get one, let me know...I can literally show you how to get it to my level with about twenty bucks....however, I'm still working on the drivetrain, so it may cost me another 30 - 40 roughly.

Heh heh heh...I was just diggin through my parts boxes, and I found a winch...yep, a winch...Now I just have to mount it, install it, and figure out how to switch it on and off...I figure a small toggle on the chassis would work well, but what I'm not sure of is how to wire it....
The winch has two wires going into it...red and black...plug the red and black into a battery pack one way, and the winch goes one way...change the red and black, and the winch goes the other way...
Perhaps I'm just having a brain fart here, but how would I wire this to a small toggle to get it to operate in and out when a battery is connected? Does anyone have any ideas?

Maybe you can use a 3 postion switch? I really dunno off the top of my head... Mine is still IFS, but flexes pretty damn good. Still needs electronics to finish it off. All I have are the steering servos, and the hi-low shifter servo for the tcase: Here it is with one tire on two 12oz soda cans: Rear shot that shows a bit of the cage: Home built roll cage from 1/8" round stock, spooled front and rear, moab tires, nissan titan body (cut for trophy truck look)

A single pole double throw switch would work for you winch.

A single pole double throw switch would work for you winch. Thanks Jim....I was thinking that too, but it was midnight and I had been working on the truck since 4 PM...I was a bit burned out on it I guess...lol

I'm sure you could get another holder if your interested in the electronics...I've got everything you need electroncis wise and I'll sell it dirt cheap....I could use the cash to fund the secret squirrell.

Well..got all the parts I need now...now I just have to finish building it...Total cost as it sits (not including parts I already had) is at 170 bucks... Can anyone imagine what a 290:1 crawl ratio will be like? ;D ;D

Wow that was fast! It looks real good. What other mods have you done other than tires and links? I would suggest not to bother with the servo savers because they are not strong enough to work in the rocks. Your tires will never turn. Plus once you are geared low enough, you'll never go fast enough to break anything.
James, I feel responsible for getting you into this! I am sorry. I can tell that it is too late and has already begun. By now you lay down in bed and cannot sleep at night because of all the crap that goes through your head on all the mods that you are going to do with this thing for a little amount of money. Soon the stock TLT transmission belt is going to start slipping, so you will have to upgrade to a Stampede tranny, then it won't be geared low enough, so you will slip a GD600 gear reducer in there and a 55turn Lathe motor, then the idler gear goes out in the Stampede tranny, now it is time to custom gearbox it. All that flex and it still keeps flipping over. Now the goal is light and low. You find that too much flex actually hurts the performance and you also get "torque twist." In the end you'll ditch the chassis you have and custom buggy it. ;D
I am not trying to discourage you, I just feel your pain that most don't understand. This RC Crawling is a BLAST and you can learn a lot of real world stuff with it!! And it is very addicting. I have finally been able to put mine down for a few months and it felt kind of good. Now I think it is time to get back into it. Maybe we could do a competition sometime. I have never done one, but there are rules you can get on the internet.
Good Job!

Just so you don't feel too bad about spending all your free time on your crawler, James, I spent about two hours of precious study time today looking at how I am going to build MINE. I smell a competition in the works ;D.

Nice work Archangel !! I knew when you emailed me Mon about the TLT and that we'd set-up a time to meet sometime later in the week.......then emailed Tues a.m. and said you couldn't wait any longer and to let you know when you could come get it - it was the beginning of the end Ha ha ha. Like I was saying, I bought it with the sole intention of building a crawler, then got sidetracked w/other "stuff "(read: too many other toys) It's coming out great though, can't wait to see all the crawlers together and running some obstacles together. I guess we'll need judges and a set of tiny cones, to set a course Later, Steve C.

Yea, I am fully aware that I'll have to further upgrade the drive train, but for now, this is a budget build and I am coming up with some creative ideas on how to get things working on the cheap. Hopefully, they do work. Tonight, I'll be building my own driveshafts. I'll also be finalizing my suspension (everything was mocked up until now, now its time to finish the links completely), and installing my spur and pinion...We will see how it does from there...And forget the Pede tranny...I've got a a stealth tranny already locked up from my old RC10 stuff....I plan on trying to keep the chassis I have and mounting my batteries packs on the axle... Stay tuned, its coming along....

I'll eventually build tube, but for now, I'm doing this all on the cheap...guess tube would not cost that much, but I need to get the rest of my driveline (tranny and such) and figure out how to mount everything before I come up with a final tube design. I know that the tube chassis will have to support the Jeep body. But then again, If I can get mine to work well in its current form, (still in process of this) I may just leave it and kick your guy's butt with a 160 dollar crawler..lol

Well, worked on it somemore tonight...got the driveshafts in and had to fabricate some RC limit straps to keep the drivelines in one piece...LOTS of flex without them. With the limit straps on, I can take a soda can easily.... This also limited the body roll and helped. Now that my links are all adjusted, its onto epoxying the ends in to finish them off... Lock the center diff, and she will be all set. I also installed my lower spur gear and pinion gear tonight. Eric, I'd be interested to see how you got the gears in there rather than the belt drive....
