Well, no photos to show just yet, but the ol' CJ has been undergoing a transformation lately. I've decided to put some time, blood, sweat and yes, even tears into the old pile of junk. However, I think the end result is going to be far worth it. I just thought I'd start this thread tonight and get it going. Stay tuned as I go through and complete the following projects with accompanying writeups and information. Projects: (Not in any particular order) Re-enforce 52 year old frame and motor mounts Strip, Sand & Paint Indigo Blue with Black Accents using Spray Paint Re-build crossmember New Front Bumper Attach Roll Cage to Frame for additional strength and rigidity DIY beadlocks Basic 12V Relay Wiring Leaks, Leaks, and more Leaks Warn Hubs & Hub Fuses Ball Joint Replacement D44 Diff Ring/Cover Fabrication All of this and more will be covered in this thread as I progress through the CJ. It took me over two years of effort into the YJ, so this will not be a fast process, but I just thought I'd get the ball rolling. I'm also using this thread to simply keep track of all my projects while getting input from others. Maybe my ideas or someone else's ideas will inspire a new wheeler. Here is how the CJ looked when I brought it home...

Well, I got home a little earlier than usual today, and I broke out the welder. Fixed a couple of small holes and cracks in the metal on the hood, and did some other minor repairs. Then I got the motivation to apply the first color to the Jeep. The colors on the hood represent the colors of the entire Jeep when I am finished. The grill will remain black, as well as the diamond plate and sliders. Also, my entire interior will remain black. Eventually, I'll be getting mastercraft style seats that are blue and black. I went with the blue because I at least wanted a little color. Also, keep in mind that this is a rattle can paint job. My second one. I've been using what I learned from the first one to make this one even better...Its all in the preparation. Anyway, here are a couple of snapshots of the hood. (Yes, I know I have to go back and touch up the blue to black transition.) I'll be wetsanding it down, taping it off, and doing a final coat. This was just a single coat of paint and a little time. Overall, I like the colors. (You'll also notice I've painted some other areas gloss black. I had either bare metal or primer in these areas, and driving it through the rain the last couple of days has started a little surface rust, so I just painted on some gloss black I had. I'll be sanding it back down a bit and painting the blue over it.) So far, the hardest part of this entire process is getting the herculiner paint job off of it that was on it when I got it...sand, wirewheel, grinders...you name it, I've tried it...including liquid strippers...that's some tough stuff, when your trying to remove it... Edit: I just noticed that the colors are way off. I think its the flash on my camera. In person, the blue is much deeper, almost the same color as the blue on the sides of the forum.

Another thing you can see in these photos are the addition of hood pins. Being that my M38's fenders are not structurally sound so to speak, I felt it was a needed upgrade. Originally, I went to checker and bought the cheap rice burner special hood pins. I should have known they were cheap when I could bend them by hand. Well, on our recent run to Burnt Rubble and Chimney Rock, I snapped one and stripped the other one. So, K5 (Kyle) donated another set, which I quickly installed the following morning. Thanks again Kyle.
Stay tuned...I've got some leaf packs to install this weekend, and I'll start tearing the current packs and rear end out of it tomorrow night. I picked up a new set from Willy's Works, and I am going to combine them with my current set. While the axle is out, I'm going to weld on new perches that are the correct width for the springs, thus, not allowing them to collapse.

Yea, as a matter of fact, I did add a step bar. Just a 1" bar to each slider so its a little easier to get in and out of the Jeep. I was getting used to it, but I was getting complaints from the passengers...lol Nothing fancy, but they work well...And yea, they are going to get bent eventually.

Wasn't me, I didn't have a problem getting in the Jeep. Must have been some of the vertically challenged passengers.

Well, I got the rear spring packs built and finished tonight, and installed. No pictures tonight (dead battery in the camera), so I'll get some tomorrow. I did find out in other news that I will be getting my YJ back...well, at least the backbone of it...the frame, springs and bumpers. The plan is to remove the drivetrain and tub from the M38 Frame, and place it all onto the YJ frame. I know its not historically correct, but it will be SOOO much stronger. Of course, this will not happen until next summer at the earliest, or whenever my frame gives up as it is now... Anyway, found these prints of the two different frames.... Should be interesting... On another note tonight, I apparently left something on in my rig when I parked it about two weeks ago. Both of my batteries were dead as a doornail tonight. I've picked up a nice charger and I have them trickle charging, so hopefully that helps. As for the update regarding the stereo...I have a 250 dollar kenwood on the way, which the BX was nice enough to sell me at 50 bucks... ;D

I also painted a red "w" on the hood... I just couldn't resist it... Since the paint project is on hold as of the moment, I thought I'd add something to it. It actually turned out fairly well. I taped off the W on the hood and painted it red, and then I did the lettering... I've got a few touch ups to do, but overall it came out well... What I was trying to duplicate...

What happen to the yj that it is being parted out. that would be a shame it was so nice looking.

The YJ was deemed DOA, and its illness was eventually fatal. The frame, bumpers and springs will be returning home to me, and this time next summer, I'll be tearing down the M38, and swapping everything over to the YJ frame. This will give me a much stronger platform to work off of, as well as a daily driveable vehicle, rather than just building a buggy. The parts available from the YJ will likely be posted in a couple of days. There is alot of good stuff on there. I would know, I built it...

Hmm...Poor Man's Beadlocks... I'm going to try something that I believe will work. Dragracers have been using them for decades to hold the monstrous slicks onto the rims under high amounts of horsepower, and they hold up well. Basically, they work just like a beadlock. Except, instead of pinching the bead of the tire between two rings, you simply screw it to the wheel. I'll be taking an extra step and breaking the bead of the tire on the outside, and siliconing it to the wheel. Then, I'll drill the wheel (32 holes each) and running the screws in. Considering that I can get four wheels worth of screws for around 40 dollars, its far cheaper than 200 dollar beadlock rings, not to mention the additional cost of new steel wheels. I'll give it a shot, and if it doesn't work, I'll get beadlocks...but its worth a shot. The only thing I am concerned about is the amount of sideload they will experience when I am articulated to one side or the other. This is where the silicone will come in handy though... Just thought I'd share...

You run screws threw the lip of the rim into the bead of the tire, all the way around the rim... And yes, you can help...

Drag racers used this to keep from spinning the tire on the rim.To hold as a bead lock I think the side force will just rip them up.another difference is race tires expand with heat where off road use is to air down.My 02 cents is not worth it.

Well, it looks as though the Yj frame might have fallen through...Will know more soon. As for the wheel screws, the only thing I am concerned about is the side loads, which I think the silicone will help with. Not sure if it will work, but since my tires spin on my rims now when I air down, I figure its worth a shot...worse case scenario is that I have to get new wheels..darn
