As some of you may know, I am looking for a front dana 60 for my blazer to go with the rear 14 bolt I already have. At the moment I can't really afford a 60 and am thinking of getting a dana 44 to replace my current 10 bolt. Right now I have the opportunity to get another 10 bolt that has been converted to 8 lug and has spare axle shafts with it for pretty cheap. Here is my question: Would it be worth me getting the 10 bolt just to hold me over until I can get a 60 or should I get a 44 and convert it to 8 lug?

Depending on how cheap this axle is, I'd personally say go for it. It will allow you to go ahead and do your axle swap, and run the same bolt pattern on your wheels. IMO, a 10 Bolt will hold up to 35's - 36's ok with mild wheeling. Later down the road, you could find the 60 or 44. As long as you have spare shafts, I say go for it bud.

I wouldn't be so scared of the 10-bolt. Is is just as strong or stronger than the Dana 44. Side by side the parts in a 10b is the same or larger than the 44. The only reason to go with a 44 would be for the flat top knuckles for cross-over steering, but then these knuckles will even swap onto the 10-bolt. I say go for it. Like James said, they are good up to 35-36" tires. Here is a good thread on the subject: click

Went and picked up the 10 bolt today. It seems to be in pretty good shape. Has some surface rust but nothing a little grinding can't fix. I plan on going through the entire axle and replacing all seals and bearings and then re-gearing it. I'll start a thread and keep everyone up to date on its progress. The guy also threw in a rear full float dana 60 that needs gears so if anyone is looking for one let me know.

I can help. As for the 60, if I didn't already have my build, I'd be all over it. I'll be building my 9" just as strong as a 60, and 100 Lb's lighter... Looking forward to some pics.
