I couldnt stand seeing us Yotas not having our own thread. So I had to make it. I dont have any toyota tech problems currently, but maybe I could help with any other taco and pickup questions. Or just have our own place to BS

Or just have our own place to BS Good idea man. I have done a few misc. little mods to my taco. I will take pictures and post them up. The firs one i did was the "deckplate mod" and i am getting ready to do the "grey wire mod" also.

The grey wire mod is a great mod. I have done it to my taco and have already put it to use. For those who dont know about it. It allows you to use your locker even if you dont have 4 lo selected. Even in 2WD!

What is the "grey wire mod" for and what does it do??? Tacomas That came with the TRD package all came stock with a rear locker. Its the e-locker. Anyways, toyota made it so you could only engage the locker when the truck was in 4 wheel low. They did this for saftey issues i think. So the grey wire mod allows you to select to lock the rear diff in 2wd or 4hi or 4low. Its just another great "cheap trick" for us taco owners.

Got some great news. I just acquired a solid axle for the SAS conversion. I am buying the Allpro SAS kit this week and should be ready to go in about 2 weeks. This is going to be a big project, not only am I doing the SAS, but while I have it apart, might as well throw in an ARB locker. I also just purchased a power steering conversion kit so I will be doing this at the same time. To top it all off, the SAS kit has 6" lift leafs so I have to get the 6" lift on the back as well. While Im in there, might as well go with lower gears and a locker in the rear!! So long savings account. Oh, and this is for the 86 yota btw

What size tire do you plan on running? Oh and with all these mods, i hope you are not worried about body damage because there wont be much around here that will stop your truck. The only thing i would consider is making sure that you really want 6 inches. My buddy has an 85 yota that had the stock solid front and he did the marlin lift. Only 3 inches and he was running 37" MTR's. Now he did some serious trimming and he is running 40" IROCS. Just my $0.02 but you might want your center of gravity lower. And if you want to see some pics of his rig with 3" lift on 40's, i can round some up for ya.

Sounds good Caleb....when are we installing it? Does the allpro kit require any fab or welding work?
I agree with the other guys...are you sure you want 6"? Might want to re-think that one...run as little lift as possible with just enough clearance...you'll be happier when you wheel it.

Well thats why I havent ordered the kit yet. I want to run 37s and I am not sure how much lift I need to clear them with no rubbing. Been doing some research but its a little harder to find when its SAS. The allpro kit requires me to grind all the ifs sh*t off the frame (duh) then weld on the shock hoops and the front and rear hangers for the leaf springs.

When you install the sas kit, you will move your axel forward. How much depends on you and your instal. So moving it forward will give you clearence from the firewall. Depending on how much trimming you want to do will also determine your lift size. I bet you could run 37's with not much trimming and only a 3" lift.

I just talked to the guys at all-pro. They are saying the same thing. The smallest they have with the SAS kit is 4". I guess I will go with that. Thanks for the help. My axle is not in the greatest shape, so I am going to clean it up, grind off what I dont need, knuckle rebuild kit, hopefully throw in an ARB and bearing kit. Give er a fresh coat of paint and then I will be ready for the install. I will let you know James when I will be ready. Probably not for 3 or 4 weeks. We will see what happens.

That sure is a big project. Your truck is gonna flex really well with those alpro leafs. What gears are you gonna throw under that thing? 5.29s?

I want 5.29s but like all plans, I just hit a major bump in the road. My finances were forced elsewhere so it looks like this will be a slow project. I have everything for the power steering conversion so I will do that this Saturday. And I just put in the SR5 instrument cluster which is a nice upgrade. Direct swap from the old one, just a few little tricks.

I'm wondering about doing a dual t-case set up, but the Marlin kit is more than I'd really want to spend (considering I don't have a free t-case, but have to buy one).
Are there any other options here?

Are there any other options here? Are you talking about the rebuilt kit that they sell ready to bolt on or are you talking about the kit they sell where you build it yourself? The kit you build yourself is cheaper but you could also just do a single case with the 4.7:1 gears in it and your crawl ratio would be like 95:1 or some thing like that.

I was talking about the kit where you bolt two together basically.

I finished the power steering conversion and love it. So much easier to turn the muds, especially when I throw the ARB on. Hey Gruveb, if you do what 2000taco says and do just the 4.7 gear swap, your crawl ratio will drastically improve and you will spen MUCH less than a dual case.

*sigh* I have the axle for the SAS but lack the cash right now. I am just cleaning up the axle right now, and then putting an ARB in the front with lower gears. Once I have the front axle how I want it, I will hang it. I have an ARB in the IFS right now and wont need it so I will gain some cash by selling it. It will fit an 86-95 direct swap with backlash set and everything. It will also fit all Tacomas but its not the same 3rd member so the backlash would have to be reset.

Direct swap from the old one, just a few little tricks. When you get back on track you sould consider going with Trail Gear or Marlins springs. They flex WAY better than the All Pros. FYI, I'm currently running All Pros. I had them when I still had a full body truck. You can get either in 3" lift and do some trimming to fit. To run 37"s your going to have to tub your firewall. It's not that hard to do. Also, go with the 5:29's, and start putting some money away for dual cases.
