I just bought a 94 4 runner. I was snooping around this afternoon and it hasn't got a belt on the compressor. The system is charged, but the clutch/pulley system rattles around. I'm thinking bad clutch or pulley. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? I didn't check it with the AC switch on yet

What i would do is buy a belt, put it on, then start the motor and turn the a/c on, if you hear a bunch of racket turn the a/c off. You can check the a/c clutch , have somebody turn the ign key to on, then you go watch the compresser pulley when they hit the ac button. the pulley should move in towards the compressor and lock up, if it doesnt then i would say the pulley might be bad.

I was just under the truck and my kid was turning the switch on and off. It makes clicking noise but the clutch doesn't seem to engage. So I'm pretty certain it's gonna be the clutch. I need to buy a manual. I'm hoping I can do the work with the compressor on the truck but I doubt it.
