Got $1000 to spend on my yota. Right now it's running 33's with stock gears and a 22re (ugh). AKA, I need gears! Would you spend it on something else instead, or are gears probably the sound next step?

I would spend em on a set of crawler gears for a Nissan Frontier with a TX10 transfer case (4 cyl), and let me take em off your hands. Seriously, I would get yourself a locker (at least for the rear) if you don't already have one. Your gears can't be that bad.

I dont know much about this but from what ive heard from Kodiak, he suggests getting a front locker for yotas since more of the weight is up there. But 2000taco has one in the rear and he does fine also. I second the idea to get a locker though.

The gears are pretty bad. gears will be considerably more expensive though, probably consume all $1k after it's all said and done with labor and what-not.

Do you know what gears you have? i have the stock 3.73's in my ZJ running 32's, its a little slower starting out but not to bad. I put the locker in the rear and my jeep does pretty good. I would still go with the locker but if you think its really that bad then i suppose go ahead and upgrade the gears.

I'm not sure what gears they are...just know they're pretty pathetic.
I could maybe get by with a crawler gear set with a twin stick set up and a front locker for now though...

If it were me i would do the locker. The truck just might seem slow because its a tired motor with lots of miles on it. I think you can hang with the gears you have and get a locker. BUT if i was doing it, i would not put a locker up front in your case because you are on IFS. If you lock the front, your truck would be more capable but if its more capable that means that you can break more parts. If you break something up front, it wont be cheap to fix, thats why i am leaving my front open untill i SAS. But it is your truck which means its all up to you, but i am putting my $0.02 into the locker piggy bank.

No decision yet. I'm leaning towards transfer case crawler gears and a rear locker. That'll leave me $400 or so that I'll hold onto for now for repairs, or maybe upgrade shocks and such too.
I don't think I'm gonna put any money into the IFS at all.

The biggest problem I've had is low end power, especially trying to go up steep slippery/loose inclines. It's not so much lack of traction, it's that sometimes I have to give it more gas than I really want to keep the motor running.
The second problem, though for where I've been it's not been that big of a deal, is traction, though not as much of an issue.
The third I've had is articulation...it's got basically none. I'm stuck with the IFS for a while, but the rear also has next to nothing. So I guess I'll be looking into that. Anybody got a cheap solution?

The transfer case crawler gears and rear locker is a good choice, and its always nice to have a little left over money for things that will break sooner or later

What kind of locker are you thinking about running?

I was thinking of a single 4.7 t-case, but then I read about the installation and saw that the installation required some grinding and clearancing. That makes me a little nervous. Buying the entire t-case will just about kill my grand.
So now I'm reconsidering...thinking of just a locker in the rear (probably a lock-rite), and some rear suspension stuff like maybe some longer shocks, brake lines...whatever.
Eventually I'll get the t-case along with SAS and 5.29's, but baby-steps for now.

Actually the car I sold was a 93 cougar with a 5.0. I figured that if I didn't sell the car I'd keep the motor and part it out. So, no, I'm not going with a 5.0 for now anyway. Especially since I bought a 22re that I plan on rebuilding. I'll just eventually gear it.

My other option is a dual t-case set up.
