there's '94 Trooper 4x4 with 3.2 V6 listed on craigslist for $600. I've been thinking of getting a 4wd, but this truck has a shot tranny. How tough and expensive is it to swap trannys, assuming I can find one? Or is this an opportunity I should allow to pass?

Manual or Automatic Tranny? The price for the rig really isn't that bad. The trick would be finding a good tranny, and I know one for my Jeep is around 2K....BUT...if you COULD find one, it would not likely be all that difficult to swap...never done an "import" but I cannot imagine its any tougher than swapping out a Suburban's tranny on the trail.

If it is auto, it is GM's 4L30E transmission, but a little different. You could possibly get a used one out of a junk yard for a good price, but you take your chances. Or you could buy the truck, if the rest of it is in god shape, and pay $2K-3K to get the tranny rebuilt. Either way, it would be a decent deal.
Or, option 3, if you are mechanically inclined, is to buy the truck, buy the tranny rebuild kit, and rebuild it yourself. Also, probably the least expensive way to go if you are properly equipped.

Automatic tranny. The owner's description of what it's doing: "It stays in 1st until it hits 4500 rpm, then shifts into 'limp mode' which will allow you to shift manually between 1st 2nd and 3rd...no 4th." Sounds to me like a sensor or maybe the valve body. He had a transmission problem before, and this is a salvage tranny that is now in the truck. If it's a cheap fix I may go for it, but otherwise have too many projects that I need to get rid of.

Hmm, the guy e-mailed me back on the Trooper. I'm on the fence. I've got too many projects at the moment and am in the process of offing 3 (hopefully). On the plus side it IS driveable as is, though it just won't go into 4th.

Rob, if it won't go into 4th, then the trans is shot. I say for the cost of the truck plus the cost of a quality rebuild would run you under $4K. A good deal indeed. See if you can't get the guy to knock another $100 off the price, and you would not need to worry about not having 4x4 again. just my $.02. It is also not my $$, so it is easier to spend ;D

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. I don't exactly have that kinda cash to throw around at the moment. Bummer the 700R4 isn't an easy swap, as those are easy and cheap enough to come across.

Yeah, but the 700 is not a plug and play unit, it does require a bit of modification. Also, don't listen to what all the guys on the Planet have to say about the 4l30E. They are actually very good and stout transmissions. The key to them (as is with any transmission) is to keep it maintained. When I was running a transmission shop, I only saw on 4l30E come in that needed to be rebuilt, and it had over 230K on it, and the owner of the 96 Rodeo that it belonged to wheeled it pretty hard too. It is all relative though. It would also be just as easy to swap in a Junkyard 4l30E into it, and save a bit of $$, but you take a risk as to what kind of condition the trans is in. Usually if the truck is wreked, then the trans is not in very good shape, as the force of the impact actually causes damage to the transmission components. Up to you though, and your budget. Just my$.02.

Reading the 700R4 swap on PlanetIsuzoo has definitely steered me clear of that route. Only way I'd take on that kind of job would be a complete engine and tranny swap, which is out of my budget at the moment. And I certainly agree that the 4L30E, as with nearly any tranny, can be quite reliable. If I had the space I'd rebuild the tranny myself. Rebuild kits are less than $300, which would give me more cash for upgrades. I may go over and look at the truck either today or tomorrow and take it for a spin if possible.

There you go rob. that is the best way to judge what you want to do. Have a good look at it, drive, and make your decision based off of that. Keep us posted.

Ok, I went and checked out the truck. It seems like the tranny just doesn't want to shift period, like the valve body is shot, or it is otherwise not building line pressure. I should be able to talk him down a bit, as he really needs to get rid of it. I'm not going to dump a tranny in though, as that gets expensive quick, and I don't want to dump much into it. Anyone know where I can get a valve body for a 4L30E?
