Ouch! Good thing I never cared for how wide those things are, or else I'd be a bit heartbroken at how pathetic those really are! Bummer we bought em Hummers cause the GIs need Jeeps.

Now, just playing devils advocate here, but you can't really knock the vehicle entirely on that video. The Hummers are actually quite capable vehicles. There are a number of reasons why a truck may get stuck, but it is mostly due to driver error or inexperience. The guy that owns that Hummer had never taken it off road until this particular trip. In fact, they guy had very little off road driving experience at all. If you watch the video, he started off by taking the wrong line, and got himself stuck and spinning his tires, caused trail damage, loosening the ground making it softer and creating ruts. He then backed up and continued on the same line with the exact same results. Had he taken the time to study his line, and pick the right one the first time he would have made it up no problem. However, with the continuous tire spinning, rut dugging ground softening he just made it worse for himself and ultimately was not able to get up the obstical. Now, I do have to agree that the hummers are damn wide, long, and not highly practical for daily trail runs in tight spaces, but the are very capable. As are most 4x4 vehicles with a skilled driver.

I know what your saying, i have nothing against hummers and im sure there are jeep, isuzu, nissan etc. videos on the web that make them look like a piece of sh@t also. Just thought i would post a video that seemed funny, no harm meant.

I understand that Hummers are quite capable, but not in the hands of an idiot. Hummers aren't the rugged all conquering vehicles they are hyped up to be. They still take skills to handle properly.

Please, don't get me wrong. I am by no means a Hummer advocate, though I do still like the H1's, this video was posted up on Expedition Portal a few months ago, and there was good discussion based off of it. Anyone can take a video of something and spin it to their favor via the Internet these days. That video was posted up by a Jeep club to knock the Hummer, when in all actuality they should have been knocking the driver.
OK, show of hands here, who hasn't taken a bad line and ended up getting stuck, or have to make another attempt at the obstacle? But, actually a pretty funny video. And, thanks for posting it up.
note: my hand is not raised

I dreamt of owning an H1 when they first came out, but after seeing a few on the road it became apparent that I would not want to drive something that wide.
Are we talking ANY kind of obstacle? I've gotten stuck in snow once, but that doesn't really count.

I've had to take a couple tries at an obstacle on more than one occasion.

Ok first funny video. LOL I have driven both the H1 and H2 off road and they are both capable trucks would I own one if I had the $$$$$$$$ NO (I won’t go into a review). There are lots of idiots who think if they spend enough money on a truck it will be indestructible (get a cheep yota and just try and kill it). I worked for Land Rover and had to defend the line from people who only thought of Land Rover as an over price grocery getter (not the most capable OUT OF BOX 4x4). Don’t get me started on what people have to say about my Trooper (back me up here datrupr).

My opinion is that it has to do with ground clearance vs. wheelbase. That hummer going up that obstacle is like a stock XJ with 30" tires going up it. It is possible that a STOCK XJ would not make it. It would "high center" itself just like the hummer did. Although getting "high centered" with independent suspention = zero traction. It is plain and simple that hummers just need more belly clearance (and solid axles.)
It is a funny thing about which vehicle is better than another out on the trail. You can modify anything to work well. Especially if it is modified with chevy stuff ;D
I have made it up hills in my blazer that a modified Scrambler and a modified FJ-40 couldn't make it up. A wider wheelbase was the key. I have seen a stock fullsize bronco go all the way through Charoleau gap effortlessly where my modified samurai had problems. The samurai would get stuck in all of the Jeep made ruts while the big Ford straddled them. There is an advantage to being fullsized!

narrow wheelbases have advantages too. I noticed I was able to pick lines with my Passport while going through/over the ruts headed to Chimney Rock that Kyle's Blazer were a little too wide for.

So pretty much every vehicle has their advantages it just depends in what you like and what kinda places your wheelin, i personally dont care what anyone drives if you have 2 or 4 wheel drive and like to hit up some trails then your okay in my book. Ill go with anyone no matter what they drive.

I don't like it when people have the mentality that their vehicle is superior and you shouldn't be wheelin your junk (I didn't say anything about Jeep owners did I?) J.K.!! There is no such thing as the perfect all around vehicle that can tackle every obstacle in its way. I love seeing a greater variety of vehicles out there. It looks like this forum so far has accomplished that.

I would have to agree with you on the whole being part of a jeep club. Dont get me wrong i have only owned jeeps for offroading and am impressed but for the most part i dont even feel like im part of the jeep club since i dont drive a wrangler but whatever. Wheel what you want and have fun doing it, thats what im doing.

I know better than try that in stock form.

One of the big reasons I started this forum was so everyone can go wheeling no matter what type of rig you have. I've checked out other forums and it seems like they are geared more toward the hard core off-roader. I'm glad this forum has evolved into an all around off-roading forum. I'm also glad that we have really great people as members. Thanks for helping to keep it that way.

We all like trucks and dirt!!
What rig you drive is a reflection of you as an individual and each rig like each driver is different.
Isn’t that why we get a truck and make it a rig?

Don’t get me started on what people have to say about my Trooper (back me up here datrupr). I'll back you up on that Rob. I have even heard comments while out on the trail about the Trooper. I won't say what they were driving though, just to keep things friendly around here ;D
