Ask Slick1100 about the Lincoln and the trailer ;D
Ok, before this gets totally out of hand.... Last night was the first, I believe, non-offroad recovery mission for TOR. Let me start this off right by explaining that until yesterday I had 3 1966/67 Lincoln Continental sedans. One was a non-running parts car, and two were runners with issues. I decided to get rid of them all, and made a trade for one. The guys were supposed to come at 8AM yesterday, but, due to whatever BS excuses they could come up with, didn't make it here until almost 4PM. And didn't have a trailer. By the time we found a u-haul trailer for them and got to the storage lot, it was 5 minutes to close. These guys didn't have a come-along or anything to pull the car onto the trailer with, so we fired up the car to drive it on. After it started I realized the parking brake release lever was broken, and the car had no brakes at all. Their suggestion? Get the car up the ramp and slam it into park once it's up. Let me tell you, 5300 pounds of car DOES NOT STOP ON A DIME! End result was the Lincoln went over the front of the trailer. The owner of the stroage lot didn't care, as it was about 15 minutes past closing time. We brought the whole mess back to my place to get it out of the lot. At this point I suggested calling a tow-truck, or something on that order but the new owners of the Lincoln wouldn't do it. I made the call to James to let him know I couldn't make it to lastnights meeting, and why. This is when James offered his assistance once the meeting was over. In the mean time, dumb and dumber started to jack up the front of the car and place blocks, tiles, and whatever else we could find under the tires. It became readily apparent to me that neither of these guys had any clue what they were doing, and despite the big fancy F350 used for towing, were trying to skate on the cheap and not pay for any help. Shortly after 8PM James, Kyle, and Jason came to the rescue. James took over the operation, which proceeded to kill my little 2 ton jack, and nearly managed to get the car onto the trailer proper, until the battery terminal melted which killed the winching effort. Now picture this: Jame's Jeep was tied off to Kyle's Blazer, pulling the Lincoln, which is set on top of a u-haul trailer, hooked up to the F350. Now then, said winch is moving ALL of the vehicles, pulling the truck/trailer/car combo to the Jeep and Blazer, the Jeep bouncy on the winch rope and tie strap. It was a truly amazing sight! But all for naught, as the winch died, and the Lincoln ended up rolling back over the edge, losing the ground we had gained. The two proud owners packed up and left, with the plan of finding a forklift or two in the morning to move the car. The carnage included: winch, battery terminal, one chock (the trailer was pulled over it!) and the 2 ton jack (badly twisted during the lifting effort). And what did I get out of this? A Vespa scooter. ;D
Big thanks to James, Kyle, and Jason for the attempted rescue! Had they not come, I'm afraid the results would have been dreadfully different.
