Tires?

Since I am still in the planning stage, I thought I would pose a question for you guys on the trail.
What tires are you guys running on and what do you think of them? I what to stay with AT's though, its my daily driver.
I have been looking at the BFG AT KO's. The specs on them are really good. My local Big O dealer has been trying to talk me into their brand, but are around $650 for four. I can not find any specs on them (Mud, snow, wear, sound level, ect...).
Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

I'll give you my brief tire history. I have a 98 Toyota Tacoma and it's my daily driver. I started with BFG AT and they where fine but they didn't have the traction I was looking for. My "home trail" has always been chivo.
Next I tired the BFG Mud Terrains they were nice, they grip pretty good but surprisingly enough they just sank in the mud. Go fig. Plus after a year of wheelin they where race slicks. lol
I now run Micky Thompson Baja Claws Radials. I love these tires they have a 6ply sidewall, which makes them super strong. I air them down to about 15psi and they look like they have 35psi. There grip is amazing. Now the down side is that I have been driving them on and off the road since Dec. and there wearing down a little bit faster then I expected. But the have excellent road manners. Not very load.
My next set according to my wife are going to be the BFG Krawler Tire. Well see how these MT claws do.

My daily driven SASed frontier has 33x1250x15 BFG ATs on it now. They are awesome on-road, an so-so off. For dirt roads or minimal rocks, they are good, and will kick butt in the sand... forget about mud and hard rocks with these. They have a 3 ply sidewall that begs to be cut on the rocks, and with the close lug pattern, they do not clean out easily.
Now, I have a set of beadlocks (in Phoenix... need to pick em up), and I am going to wrap those with some Super Swamper TSLs for strickly off-road use. The only street time these will see, is to and from the trails.
To answer your question in one line: THE BFG AT TA/KOs ARE TOTALLY WORTH IT!!!!

Before I stepped up to 33" mud tires, I used BFG AT KO's and couldn't have been more happy with them. They kicked ass on the icey alaskan roads and did well offroad too.

If your going to play in the desert you will want something with strong sidewall, the things in the desert will slash thin walled tires like a hot knife through butter. And one spare tire migt not be enough, just ask (azdesertrhino) he lost two tires on this last trip one was a compleat lost the other was bad too but we were able to put 2 plugs in the sidewall to get him home. Its just one of the things that happen when you wheel out here

D.J. is correct, I suffered some pretty serious tire damage. It wasn't anything real serious that destroyed the sidewalls on 2 of my tires. A small cut off tree stump or branch. Take a look at the Chimney Rock pictures from 08-19-06. James posted some pictures there of the tire damage and the killer tree wood.
I just ordered some Super Swamper TSL's 33X12.50X15's (they are also about the same height as my 35" BFG's). 8 ply construction. See the other thread "tires are expensive". There is a link to the site I ordered from. Also have a "No questions asked" warranty.

Well, here comes the bad news. I had no choice. I had to purchase tires today. :- I took the truck in for an oil change and they came back and told me that a had a split on the drivers side front tire (inside side). Crap! Went to Big O Tires, bought thier brand Mesa APs. Just something to hold me over until I decide what tires I really want. It was not bad ... about $270 and they even gave me $20 for the rear ones. I want to thank everyone for thier input. I will probably go for the BFG AT KOs for on/off road driving. Later I might get something on a different rim that I can use for more serious trail runs.

On my old Jeep I ran the BFG AT's before they came out with the KO's, I was happy with them. Then after lifting it I ran the Sport Kings and was happy with them after lasting 7 years (no longer available ). On my truck I'm running the Pro Comp AT's only had them on for about 10,000 miles, so far they are holding up. My new Jeep is running the Goodyear MTR's, til Oct. when I get it into the air and stick some 35's under it. Still haven't decided what tires I'm putting on yet, so far all I know is they will be a mud tire. I'll have to talk to my tire supplier to find out what they have.

Well so much for the BFG T/A KO's and the Big O Mesa A/P's. I only drove on the Mesa's for 30 miles. They were not even worth using for "something to get by". A glorified passenger car tire. So .... I went with the Big O Big Foot A/T's. I needed something with a warrenty for a daily driver, which is good on these tires. I could not get the pics saved on the puter today, so I will try and post pics later. I will also give an update of the tires after I have put some miles on them.

7lbar my vote is for swampers they will take any thing you have to throw at them:D What kind of mileage are you getting out of them, with that aggressive of a tread it can't be much, plus driving into Tucson at least once a week forty miles of highway can be pretty loud. On Saturday while waiting at the Circle K we heard James when he turned on to American Ave.

LOL I know how that is, just pick up a used tire on the cheap for now that will get you home and some one allways has a tire wrench
