Tip Top Mine and 76'er Mine
I did this trip with the AZ Back Country group.
This was a fun run. Tip Top is located in the southern Bradshaw Mtns, Prescott National Forest (just an fyi). The road is easy with a few rocky sections, and a few hilly, rocky sections. But any 4x4 can make it easily, mostly in 2 wheel drive. We had 4 Jeeps (CJ types), on Cherokee, a Suburban and my Ranger. I had with me my friend Lysandra, this was her first off-roading experience. She really enjoyed it and wants to go again on another run.
The trip went well, no problems for anyone, until my Ranger started acted rather odd. It started cutting out and the tack needle started bouncing around a bit. It finally just quit running. There were two of the Jeep drivers behind me, and they helped troubleshoot the problem. I'm not mechanic so I didn't help much, just made sure the spark plug wires were securely seated at the distributer cap and the plugs. We found a bad wire at a relay switch, taped it and still couldn't get going. We then found there was no spark at all. We found another loose wire, this one underneith the coil. I pulled a connecter from the bottom of the coil and plugged the wire into it. Still no joy. Then one of the guys noticed one of the wires in that plug had been stripped back a bit further so he suggested we tire the loose wire to it, then plug in back in. We did that, and the engine fired right up. We taped it in and proceed onwards with no more problems.
We all made it up to the 76er mine, explored it a bit, finding a rattle snake inside we didn't go in any further. We went back to the area with the old windmill and cow trough for a break. After which we headed back to the Tip Top mine and four of us climbed up to the mine and went in a couple hundred feet. At that point there was some broken rock on the bottom so we decided it prudent to not go in any further. The mine apparently goes quite a ways further though.
After that we called it a day and headed back to the freeway. A couple of the guys stayed back in the hills to do some fun running in the jeep trails. Lysandra actually caught a few Z's on the trip out, how I can't imagine, with her head bouncing around like a bobble-head doll. heheh.
After that I drove her out to the Desert Wells area near Florence Junction, to teach her how to drive with a clutch, and she did very well.
It was a very fun day for everyone.
