There are a couple of good camping spots, below the ridgeline and out of the wind.

Or heres another idea, what if we drive up the paved side of Mt. Lemmon come down the backside of Mt. Lemmon and then when we get to the peppersauce campgrounds start making our way up Rice Peak and camp out at the top? That would be a good day of wheeln. I haven't run Rice Peak, but I heard it is tight up at the top... pretty much room just to turn rigs around and stuff. Can someone confirm this rumor?

Well we could camp wherever there is a nice open spot along the trail but if we do i would like to camp closer to the top to wake up to a nice view. Does anyone else wanna do this, run down the backside of mt lemmon then up rice peak? anyone?

Greg your right, it is tight for a large group, at the top it might be 40 foot in diameter or less, not quite sure but here is a picture from one end to the other. Wow the Jeep looks small there.

Looks like there is pleny of room to make a circle of cars to camp and build a fire up there if there isnt too much wind. Or we could camp wherever the majority wants. Still waiting on Slick to take a look at this, where you at Slick?? So far here is somewhat of a list 1. zjeep 2. scooterd58 3. robert 4. (probably) Slick and Doc

I am more than likely not going to attend, so my opinon is moot... According to that pic, it would be pretty uncomfortable for those using tents. Looks kinda rocky. I personally, would either use the Peppersauce Camp area, or the area west of the "official" camping grounds. I believe this is the start of the Rice peak trail...

Hmm, this thread blew up lastnight while I was asleep! I'm good for a run still, and Rice Peak is on my list of places to visit. We need to figure out where to hook up with Robert. Almost makes more sense for us to meet up in Oracle first, or perhaps we can go to San Manuel? I've yet to visit there either.

You can get four rigs on top,not to much room after that.I wouldn't camp up there to much wind.

Slick, get this organized lol this is your run i was just throwing some ideas out there. The only ways i know how to get to oracle are by Oracle Highway, over the backside of Mt. Lemmon, through the Gap or i suppose running your long way through reddington to get there. I Guess.... im down to do any of these ways to get there if everyone else is cool with that so pretty much just me Scott and You right now since we would be meeting up with Robert along the way. Let me know whats going on.

I know he has to work in the morning, but we're contemplating either a later start so he can join us from the get go, or giving him a place to meet up with us.

Ok, how about this? We meet up at the gas station at Tanque Verde and Catalina Hwy at 0900, depart at 0930. Climb the front side and run down the back, meeting Robert at Peppersauce around 2PM (assuming he doesn't meet us at the gas station on the front side). Do some side explorations along the fire road and camp for the night. Hit Rice Peak and do some more exploring (there's the BLM wilderness and the Gila River next to San Manuel) and split up Sunday afternoon.
Hey Robert, you have a CB?

From what I've seen of an extended forcast, it's gonna be cold! The Doc and I planned on sleeping in the truck.
As far as the CB goes, I should be getting my new unit this week, and hope to get it installed before the weekend. If so, I'll have my handheld and two Motorola Talkabouts if needed.

Wow, seriously appreciate the offer Kyle! I'm waiting to see if James is still up for this run, though I know he has to work in the morning Saturday. He's got another pair of the Talkabouts too, so we'd be completely covered.

So run up and then down Mt. Lemmon do a little exploring and set up camp for the night, could we camp for free cuz i dont really want to pay to sleep in the back of my ZJ outdoors. Then the next day sunday go wheeln up rice peak and possibly explore other places. in san manuel. That sounds good to me. Are you talking about the gas station at tanque verde and catalina highway near a McDonalds? Not quite sure where your talking about but im sure i could circle around and find you parked somewhere. Also personally i hope we arnt out all day sunday, i hope we can wake up early and wheel during the morning and early afternoon because i have to be at work at midnight on sundays and need to get some beauty sleep in before i go in or it will be a rough night and some aircrafts could start falling out of the skies. If need be i can leave early and head back but im looking forward to this run. Any more takers besides zjeep scooterd58 Slick and Doc and Robert

Yeah, that's the gist of it Jason. I'm sure there are other spots we can camp in other than Peppersauce. Perhaps we'll find something while exploring? As for the meeting point, why don't we keep it simple. There's the shopping center on Catalina Highway at the corner of the intersection with Tanque Verde. Make the turn onto Catalina Highway and it is immediately on the right side. Park near the street so we're easy to see.

He's got another pair of the Talkabouts too, so we'd be completely covered. As it stands, I'm still up for it, but not sure of what time I'll get out there. I'm figuring that once I get done with work, I'll head over Mt. Lemmon and meet you guys at the campground.... Not entirely sure if I'll be camping since my girls will be with me, but I'll at least make the run out there to say hi and to get out of the house.

Picked up a pair of 20 degree sleeping bags at Target yesterday, and have plenty of blankets, plus a buddy has offered the use of his small generator to run some electric heat. Now to figure out how to block off the windows in my rolling fishbowl to keep some of that heat in!

I got the gen running, and as luck would have it, it's rated at 1500 watts and so is my little heater...
On another note, something that totally slipped my mind, but is a factor since we aren't staying at Peppersauce: something to cook dinner on. I've got a big grill, but it's a pain to carry around. Who's good at starting a campfire? According to the SWCC (the coordinating center for fighting fires in the Southwest) there are currently no restrictions for campfires in the Coronado National Forest, so we're safe to have a small fire.

New forcast for sat. is 33 deg.Cold ! Ya that is normally the temp at the airport so it will be colder up on the mountain or hill depending on where your from. Cause where I am from there would be a fair amount of snow already. Ya'll have fun!
