I was wondering if it is possible to put a factory electric locker from a 1996 4runner in my 2002 Tacoma.

First thing i would find out if both trucks have the same rear axle. If they do there still might be a differance inside. I would call toyota or somebody that works with toyota and ask them. I think that there is a place on 1st street by craycroft and speedway that i here is pretty good. Sorry but thats the best that i can do.

Just thought of this, try calling Lloyds tranny and talking to darrell, he is a really nice person and knows his stuff.

Try Bill at Tucson Differential. Pretty nice guy. They are straightening my bent amc 20 axle right now. They are near 22nd and Swan.

I am sure that I have the Toyota 8 in with 30 splines. Does anyone know what the 96 4runner is?

Does anyone have an opinion/ input on a rear full spool? I think it would be stronger and easier to put with the stock diff? I think the full spool runs like 150 bucks?

I've run full time lockers in the past, and I now run a spool in my 9". Each one has its benefits and its drawbacks. The one advantage of the detroit (or similar) is that it infact does unlock when there is no load on it, allowing your tires to turn better which allows better tire wear. A downside of a detroit is that they can be unpredictable in their handling, especially as they get older and get some more miles on them. Lane changes can be entertaining to say the least should the locker wind up and then unload all at once. Only happened to me a few times, but if your not ready for it, it can get your attention. That being said, a spool also has goods and bads. One of the goods is that its a solid, inexpensive, predictable locker. They are easy to install (could easily be done in a garage with the right tools). The downside is that they will wear out your tires very quickly. If this is something you daily drive, I'd suggest shying away from a spool. However, the only time I ever truly notice mine is when I am making a 180* u-turn or a very tight turn in the parking lot... Just my .02
