I'll be replacing the rear main seal on my Jeep, which involves pulling the transfer case, the transmission, the clutch, the flywheel, and pretty much everything else attached and replacing all of the fluids....
All of that work for a STUPID seal...anyway....
While I'm in there, I'll be putting in a new clutch, turning the flywheel, balancing my new front driveshaft, replacing my front shocks, working on my front brakes, (while I've got the wrenches out anyway, why not) And any other maintenance while I am under there. This will be done in my garage on my floor...no lifts....no fancy equipment (except a harbor freight tranny floor jack...lol...just old fashion work...If your interested in helping, learning or just BS'ing...c'mon out... Friday we will start at 6 PM and work until? Saturday Morning around 9:30'ish we will start again.
Slick, I'll be needing my jackstands back by the 22nd if at all possible.
Thanks, James

Man, that sounds like a fun day I hated pulling my tranny and tcase when I did the 4wd conversion. That is never a fun job. I would love to give a hand, but we are going to have my bachelor party, and my brother will be in town, and we'll need our rest for that night, lol. Lemmie see what I can do when the time gets closer... I would like to give a hand.

Well, just got done doing some interesting reading....men dancing really isn't any fun....
Anyway....moving on to the point...It appears that I may not have to pull the drivetrain to get to this seal....never done one before in a Jeep, so this is a new deal...According to a few sites, it may be a 2 piece seal that I can get to by dropping the oil pan and removing the rear bearing cap....hmmm...back to reading...this might not be so bad afterall..

When I did the one on my old 90 XJ I was able to do exactly like you just mentioned. Dropped the pan, loosened the bearing cap and was able to change it that way.
Not sure how it is set up on a 4 cyl but on the 4.0l it is a 2 piece and the worst part was driving the top section out of the engine.
Also, are you absolutely sure it is the rear main that is leaking? On a 4.0L there are other items that will give the indication of a rear main leaking.
Just my 2 cents!

I'm going to look for other sources...experience tells me that the only other place it could be leaking that badly is at the rear of the valve cover (common on 4.0's, not sure about 2.5's)

James, I can lend a helping hand, and will definitely have your jacks back to you. Pending finding a place to do the front axle swap, I currently am not using them.

Ahh...no big deal...time to throw in my spare (new) clutch, fix my drivelines and check everything else out while I'm under there....time for some much needed maintenance...besides, its alot easier to paint the undercarriage with the drivetrain removed... ;D

Hey James (just throwing this out) I've got an engine hoist and engine stand. Lots of Jacks and a ton of tools if you need anything just let me know. oh yeah lights and a tent( for night and outside work). I do a lot of engine rebuilds, custom work, so if you need anything just let me know. (That's why they call me Wrench)
When it comes to engines I'm there.

Wow..guess I've been so busy this week with work and TOR stuff, I totally missed this one...Anyway, the rear main on my Jeep was done on Wednesday at Ventana Auto, thanks to a new TOR club member. I'll be entering his information in a little bit, but he let me use his shop, lift and tools to get the job done and it went MUCH faster.
So, tonight's tech day is cancelled, however, I will still be doing the remainder of the work tomorrow in the garage if you want to swing out and BS for a bit...
Thanks to everyone who offered.

Just got back from James' house. The tech day was more of a "check out the RC crawler and winch the blazer twice" day. James, myself, and zjeep ended up taking a short trail run through the wash near James' house. Got the blazer stuck twice and had to be winched out by James (damn open diffs). Then James got stuck and had to winch himself out. Wish I had a camera so everyone could see James actually stuck ;D. Oh ya, it was on the easy part of the trail too ;D. Had a great time. We also fabbed up a rear bumper for zjeep.

Oh, and Kyle can attest to this.....If I do get stuck, and your bring out a camera phone and attempt to snap a picture....you had better run fast...He HAD the photo, until he closed his phone while running without saving it...I can move pretty quick....
