On Sunday, a few of us (Archangel, Scooterd58, Rocktoy, Rolldit, and a friend of mine, Parks Rinehart) decided to take a trip up to check out Hackberry Creek – just outside of Superior. The scenery on the drive there was already worth the trip, however, it got better after that. The last time I had seen Hackberry Creek was about 3 years ago when I still had my Cherokee and the trail was under raging water, with snow at the very top.
On Sunday the weather couldn’t have been more perfect and the trail was still challenging. James managed to find a few spots to test out his articulation while we stopped for lunch.
The most difficult obstacle was a rather large rock face with a 10-foot sheer drop-off to the left and a big rock that blocked your tire on the right. The rocks were all covered with sand and were quite slippery making it difficult to find any traction. I was the first one to attempt the obstacle and after several tries managed to make it up. Of course, James claims the only reason I made it up was because I went first. I’m waiting for pictures and video from Parks and Rolldit of my attempt and we’ll get some other opinions on that one.
Parks was next and made it with only minor rock stacking.
Scott was not as lucky (you need bigger tires buddy) and after having stacked rocks for him as well, the guys decided he needed a tow strap.
No, James you’re not strong enough to pull him up by yourself…..
James was last and would have made it up with no problems were it not for his “bald” tires.
When rock stacking didn’t work for him, he decided to use his winch before something broke.
There were several more challenging obstacles.
The last rock hill that didn’t give us any problems coming down…
posed a real challenge going back up. The sun was just at the right angle where it literally blinded you. Luckily, everyone made it up just fine.
James had one more spot where he “entertained” everyone and by managing to put is rig sideways on the trail. Sorry I missed that photo opportunity. Other than that the trip went great. Driving home was another story. Mental note: anyone putting on a lift, make sure you re-check all your bolts and re-tighten everything up after 100 miles or so. Scott found out how important that was when he was driving down the hill, through the tunnel, back to Superior. If the death wobble didn’t scare him, what he found when he got under his rig must have. Everything in the front end had loosened up and needed retightening. After a few minutes we were all back on the road again and got back into Oracle Junction around 8:00pm safe and sound.
Thanks to everyone that came out. It was an awesome day of wheeling.
P.S. Austin, you missed a great day…..did you catch the garter at the wedding?
