We started out with five rigs and hit the trail around 9:40 or so. Sometime around 11:30 or so we ran into a couple of other jeeps. One guy had broken an axle shat on a dana 35 and had no tools. We ended up letting him borrow our tools and bs'd for about an hour with them. Meanwhile, a phone call was made to James and he had some spare 35 shafts lying around in his garage. He loaded up and headed out to help those dudes. DJ ended up staying there with them and the other four of us cotinued on. I know they got him fixed and were finally heading out of the trail by 9:00 tonight. Anyways, here is a link to my pics from the run. PICTURESAnd here is a shot of the jeep with a broken axle shaft. I know James got some more pics too. It is kinda ironic how there has been all this talk about "who changes an axle shaft out on the trail" Well here is a good example. \

Nice pics, it sure is ironic how we were just talking about who changes axle shafts on the trail, it can happen to anyone. Might as well be prepared.

I thought I broke my rear shaft today too... was going thru a rock garden, and BANG! Turned out my slider kissed a boulder the size of a coffee table, lol.

Just got in....will post pictures of the carnage tomorrow. I have the shaft and all of the PIECES.... Also, will do a writeup tomorrow. Got there at 3:30...got out 6.5 hours later.... not bad for an entire axle rebuild on the trail... There was other carnage on the way out....a busted brake cylinder on the TJ with the original problem...had to pinch off the rear lines completley to get it rolling, and Dragon51 busted his passenger side shackle mount clean off the frame....the spring hit the frame, and we just secured it with the winch.,...he drove it all the way home...
Oh, and Sniper did well... Overheated a couple of times (new radiator and hood vents coming soon), and I've got a couple small electrical gremlins (lights blinking (interior))...other than that....it did very very well.

In this case it's definitely how you use your vehicle. But hats off to James....he did one hell of a job repairing the rig. Didn't lose his cool.....or anything......I'm impressed.
Actually it was a fun rescue run!! And in the process we hopefully gained two new members.

Where he snapped a shaft was not that hard of a spot...Dragon51 drove right through it to secure the vehicle from the front with his winch. But, yes, it depends on how you use your vehicle... I wheel mine pretty hard and do some pretty gnarly things with it, thus the reason I carry all of the spares, and on the opposite end of the spectrum, there are those who don't need all of the spares because they do not do as much with the rig. Oh, and its not just a Jeep thing...I've replaced D60 shafts on a dodge, a Chevy 14 Bolt and a scout D44. It all depends on how, and where you wheel your rig...also depends alot on driving skill.

it sure is ironic how we were just talking about who changes axle shafts on the trail Yeah we mentioned that yesterday as well. Out of the five Jeeps in our group, there was 1 Ford 9 inch, 1 Ford 8.8, 2 Dana 44's, and 1 Dana 35. But no spare shafts. Big thanks go to James and Christine for heading up there, to help them out and to DJ for staying to help guide James into where they were at. Lots of fun on the trail, even when towards the end when my Jeep tried to flop on it's side, or at least it felt like it was about to go. Thanks to Colby and Sergio for hanging on to the strap to keep the driver's side halfway planted.

Where did it tip? The step?

the first attempt at the step, I was off the right line and it slid to the left, but that wasn't bad, the part where it wanted to lay over, was as you come down the elvator shaft, cross Dodge Wash and start back up the hill, there was two washed out ruts, trying to get on top of the ruts, the driver's front tire kept getting higher and higher, then I decided to back down and that happened a few more times, til we put the strap on. The last time through there it wasn't a problem, the only difference was I had a passenger this trip, it might have thrown my balance off, I don't know. Just weird, no one else seemed to have a problem.

Looks like a good little playground. Can't wait till I get to explore that area there. Not to be rude, but a TJ with a broken rear axle is not anything new. I have seen WAY too many with broken shafts. Alloys at that too. Even if he had a 44 it would be wise to carry spares especially when you load it down.

You're absolutely right. But too many people think they won't have problems and don't plan ahead. I'm one to talk. I took my stock '06 Rubicon in yesterday with no parts. But then again, I had James with me, who carries everything but the kitchen sink.

You are right, with the right amount of load any axle can break. My friend snapped a 32 spline Ford 9 inch, wish I could say it was on the trail, but no it was on the pavement. Too much of the skinny pedal, when there is a 429 cobra jet, between the framerails.

How big of tires was he running to snap the axle shaft though? From the picture it looks like he has 35s or so, not a good idea on a dana 35.

My memory is not like it use to be, or ever was. I forgot when we were talking about it after you went up the red waterfall and Nick attempted it.
