Upper Woodpecker is rated a 4.5 on the standard rating system, but there are bypasses for almost all of the obstacles so almost any vehicle can make it through with proper guidance. To me it seemed some of the bypasses were worse than the obstacles because they put your vehicle in a steep off-camber situation www.4x4wire.com/trail/report/az/woodpecker00/

That is one fun trail, my rig laughed at it but it was still fun. Ajax and Martinez Mine are also fun when you are in that area. Then you can always skip on over to Oracle and run the Charelou Gap. But come on, the heat has got to be a bummer down there right now. I just held a run up here in my back yard 9 rigs showed up, we had fun and stayed comfy in low 90's weather with trees and shade. ;D

4.5? really? When I was on it last year, I gave it no thought till I was told where we were at. The ratings here must be different than in Colorado. A 5 up there is a 5, buggy only IMO if you value your glass, doors, fenders, and quarters.. The buggy guys need trails for them and thats the 5s. That is what they are built for. I won't run on a 5 rated trail as I do enjoy having a body. Yep, I am a puss. ;D

That will explain the ratings and if they are different from Colorado.

Unfortunatly upper WP is pretty much no longer a 4.5. With all the bypasses and rock stacking you can take almost anything thru. The last two times I went thru I unstacked the "bypass" to fire hole. Sad!

FYI - and Lower Woodpecker is off limits (officially - according to the BLM) because of all the petroglyphs.

FYI - and Lower Woodpecker is off limits (officially - according to the BLM) because of all the petroglyphs. More like because of the "nature trail". We have been wheeling thru there for how long? And even had a few comps with no petroglyph damage. But now that the hippys can walk down there real nice and easy they need to get it shut down. Baaahhhhh, see, now I'm in a bad mood!

Sorry.....actually it's really because of the petroglyphs. I walked it with BLM and when they first let them do comps 6 years ago. No one knew of the petroglyphs. Unfortunately, all the spectators on the rocks were drawing on the rocks, trying to copy them. OOPS! I keep asking for the official archaeologists' reports on the area, but haven't seen them. I just thought it was ironic that the Indians didn't even know they're there until they were consulted on their authenticity.

I was one of the event photographers for the last comp there. The petroglyphs were all marked off keeping the spectators out of that area.
