Rice Peak is an fun and very pretty run. It starts at Peppersauce Campgroud on the Mt. Lemmon Control Rd. South of Oracle. The road first follows the canyon, then you complete a loop in either direction (you choose). Half-way through the loop is the "Dead End" road to the summit. This dead end climb is VERY steep, narrow, and loose (in places). The last quarter mile to the summit is extremely steep and loose (a locker or two is recommended). This last 1/4-mile section should not be attempted by almost every stock vehicle. Stock vehicles....make the loop and return to Peppersauce.

It's rated a 3.0 trail, probably for the last 1/4 mile up to the summit.

Sounds interesting. I might attempt the last bit once I get the truck lifted. I'm gonna think 3.0 is my limit, and will use proper judgement on the scene.

slick, you will be okay except for that last hundred yards up to top. There is a good turn around there. My old CJ makes it without lockers and only 31" tires.

Sorry for being a novice, but can someone post what the different trail ratings means. I have always followed the road until I could not make it no more. You know, the judgement thing.

Howdy All, I found this site searching google for info on Rice Peak. Nice pics/discussion on it here! I just completed the climb to the very top in my FJ Cruiser - 100% stock. That last bit was INSANE!! Just about wet myself there, coming down was worse... very loose rocks up there. Here I am at the summit. And this is the view out the window as I began the descent... I was pretty sure I was about to die, but that's just the scenery getting to ya.
