hey i just wanted to know everyones thoughts on a Super 35 Kit for my cherokee, the guy said he can get it in with gears for around 1300. He said it will be just as good as a d44 with upgraded splines and he said i will be able to run 35's with 4.56 no porblem, and it comes with the locker.

i dont see any point to it..
u will still have the weak houseing..
and for that price u can just do a complete axle swap. (8.8 or similar)
and if your smart about it you can upgrade both front and rear axles for that price.
its like polishing a turd....... (or somthin..)

I couldnt agree more, for 1300 bucks you could easily find an 8.8 and build it with 4:56 and a locker. Or you might be able to find one already built on some of the local boards. I would shop around and be willing to get your hands dirty before i put any money into an dana 35.

Its still a 35. I guarantee you it will not hold up. One of my friends in Denver spent $1000s on every single upgrade you can get for a Grand Cherokee. I watched him destroy his super 35 in Moab on Pritchett. I ended up pulling him, a CJ7 and a Toy off that trail. After that trip we built him a Buggy. My friend Jim that was just down here from Colorado, finally seen the light and up graded to a pro-rock 60 rear in his TJ. He had to as he keeps trying to stay up with me. ;D He has destroyed all sorts of high dollar D44 parts. Alloy axles, cyroed gears, ARBs, axle housings. He destroyed enough 44 axle parts he could have bought a 60 many times over. He only runs 35" tires too. As you can see, it is nothing radical either. He is just a hard wheeler.

Look at craigslist there are two D60 right now for next to nothing, if you want to go that way, but a ford 8.8 and a locker with gears will come in under that 1300 and be a hella lot stronger than a polished up trudy5 don't waist your money on building it up. Most junk yards run about $250 for the 8.8 say $500 for a detroit then $200 for gears and master kit a case of beer or 2 for the days work and your still under $1300 ;D
And almost for got you also pick up rear disk breaks too! ;D

Alright sweet thanks guys, i wasnt planning on doing this anytime soon it would of been in like 3 or 4 months i just wanted to get opinions and see what everyone thought cause i kinda thought the same about the housing and all and i was still thinking about getting a 8.8 or a 44. Just wanted to get opinions and see if anyone knew of an axle out there or what not. Also how hard is the 8.8 swap i have never talked to someone that has done it on a XJ only on a ZJ and i wasnt sure if it is straight with leaf springs or if there is any fabbing to do. Thanks alot for everybodys words of advice hope to hear more soon.

Alright here you go, on craigs list what does everybody think 1) D44 Trac Lock $150 2) D60 Posi maybe 4:10 not sure on price 3) D60 3.73 $250 4) D60 4:11 Posi $250 which one do u think would be the best and easiest swap and the cheapest overall route to go

Well it depends on what your looking at doing. What gears you got in the XJ right now? What gears come in the D44??? Also is the D44 the complete axle with trac lock and out of an XJ because that would probably be the easiest and cheapest way to go with little to no fabbing anything.

With 33s and a 60, you will drag the diffy on almost everything. Not to mention how wide it will be if kept full width.

yeah i was thinking about doing the 44 becuase it would be a straight swap, and im not sure what gears are in the 44 cause the guy didnt answer his phone but his family said its still for sale. Do you know if i can use my stock brake lines and driveshaft on the 44? should i upgrade the trac lock?

oh my bad i have 3:73 in the jeep right now and am loking at going to 4:56 for now on my 33's but eventually going to 35. so it will make a difference, do u think the 44 will handle all the abuse on the trails and highway driving?

i went and looked at one of the 60's and it was about 62 inches wide and about 41 from perch to perch which my 35 is 44 from perch to perch and it had 4.10's with posi

Definitely the XJ D44 is the easiest swap, but I don't think it would be the cheapest. They're getting harder & harder to find (only '87-'90 XJs had em), so a junkyard that had one would probably be asking high $$ for it.
Other D44s that would work are from Scout IIs (the one I have in my XJ is from a '72 Scout) - downside is the different 5 on 5 1/2" lug pattern, and its spring under, so you'd need to get new perches, cut the old ones off & weld new ones on. It's also about 2 inches narrower than the XJ axles, so depending on your wheel backspacing, you may need wheel spacers. The Grand Wagoneer D44 would also work, but with the same downsides - it's got a 6 on 5 1/2" lug pattern, and spring under. It is the same width though.
Just a couple more options...

i just talked to the guy that had stuff posted about the 44 and hes an idiot its just the trac lock carrier but the way he worded it meant the whole axle and then i asked him if he had an axle for sale and he said he has one under a jeep but he wants to sell the whole jeep

Sounds like you might have a plan, then just turn the D35 into trailer it's the best use for them ;D
