So i have a buddy at my shop that drives a 2000 something stock Jeep TJ and he has been having trouble getting his 5speed in gear. After he has been driving and comes up to a red light and is in neutral it doesnt want to shift into 1st 2nd and now even sometimes into 3rd so he starts out in 4th occasionaly. If he throws it into reverse it will grind a little then allow him to put it back in 1st. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? He said the clutch was replaced not to long ago. Could it be the Slave Cylinder? or Pressure Plate? Anyone who has had this problem before your advice would be great on how you got it fixed. Thanks

There is a little resivoir near the brake booster (or there was on my 95 anyway) amd of ot runs out of fluid, the pedal gets a little or a lot soft and it won't go into gear. Other than that, I'd check the clutch itself, which means dropping the tranny...it could just be smoked.

Hmm, sounds like it could be a few things. Start with the easiest, and least expensive: was the throwout bearing replaced at the same time as the clutch? Also, unless it's been seriously abused, why was the clutch changed so soon? Another thing I would consider looking at is the shifter installation. Sounds simple enough, but most shifters I've seen have a nylon bushing at the base. If the bushing isn't there, or it's worn out, then it could cause issues to that might not be seen while moving due to the synchronizers in the tranny.

To answer James question, the fluid was full, we even tried bleeding it and filling it with new fluid. Im not sure why it needed the clutch replaced in the first place, i will have to talk to the guy when we get back from thanksgiving break to answer more questions. Thanks for the tips though.

I had that same problem w/ my XJ (I have the AX-15 tranny). I came to a stop & took it out of gear. It wouldn't go back in to ANY gear - I finally managed to jam it in 3rd & limp it home, making a horrendous gear whine noise the whole way. When I dropped the tranny & opened it up, I found that the reverse idler gear was partially engaged which had the interlocks keeping any other shift rails from moving.

I had this happen a few years back on my (now gone) Toyota pickup, it did exhibit the same symptoms you are describing. About a year later I had the clutch replaced, and the slave cylider was nad too, that took a while to figure out. I am not familiar w/ the tranny your buddy has, but these may be things to look at too. Good luck.
