So i picked up an 8.8 rear axle from 97 Ford Explorer, i need to get the rear axle locked because those of you wheeln with lockers know how much better you can wheel with them. Ive been looking at just getting a mini spool for it, they are cheap and easy to put in. Does anyone have any input on why i shouldnt get a mini spool to lock the rear end? I dont drive my jeep that much so the tires wont get eaten up to bad i dont think, ive had the jeep a little over a year now and maybe put 4500-5000 miles on it, most of thos came from running the trails. Let me know what you guys think, also when i drop out the dana 35 (whenever the 8.8 is completed) that i have on the jeep right now im gonna sell the Lock Right locker thats in it, its only got about 4000 miles on it and i paid $236 for it, and would like to get $100 for it so if anyone needs a cheap locker for their dana 35 you should buy it

Sounds like you have a good plan don't know a hole lot about the mini spool, other than they don't like the road much and tires get worn a lot faster. I have a Detroit in mine and I have been real happy with that, but they are a bit price'e for the 8.8

Exactly, a detroit would be nice but im trying to get this done on a budget, so far only spent $100 gonna spend about $180 for brand new rotors and calipers and pads, then about $80 for a mini spool if i go any other route ill end up spending about $280-300 something for any other locker, so the $80 mini spool is looking pretty good to me right now

Sounds like you're gonna have a real capable rig soon. Looking forward to seeing you get it out on the trail.

Just posted an ad looking for one and this guy emailed me. pretty much ended up costing more than i thought i would put into it but it will be worth it when its under the Jeep finally. I ordered the spool for it too, if i dont like it just leave it in long enough until i get some more money for a real locker.

So is it out of another Jeep? I got mine for just over 400 and that was with a Detroit it was also out of a YJ but we had to re-weld the perches since they were way off and using a bunch of perches was out of the question plus it one of the perches was 5 degs. off from the other one and set a few in too close but after all the work was done it was well worth it. YOU should be a very happy camper when it's all rocking and rolling ;D ;D ;D

The axle did not come out of a jeep, it came out of a 97 Ford Explorer. I bought the axle for $100 and its completely stock with 3.73 gears (matching my dana 30). The axle when completed is going to basically be brand new, parts i bought today rounded up to be about $240 and the spool was $80 so im sitting at about $420. Not bad but not great at the same time, the junkyard wanted $500 for one. I got off work about 7 in the morning and waiting around for people to wake up before i went to work on the axle, living on base (not allowed to work on cars in base housing) doesnt work out to well when trying to modify an axle . Pretty much stripped the axle down and went to work on grinding off all the brackets that come stock for the Explorer Worked for awhile before i got to tired to go on (i had just worked from 10 - 7 that morning) So here is what the axle looks like out back right now. Will resume work on it Monday and hopefully start reassembling it sometime soon. Will keep you guys posted.

Oh yes, it will not be completed in a few hours will take a couple of days to have everything completed and bolted up, hope to have it under the jeep and running before the January run but we will see, if not my dana 35 will hold fine with only 32s on it.
