Well if your planning on hitting up the Coke Ovens you better plan on doing it with the next 2 weeks or so. The AZVJC is pretty butthurt about people still goign out there because they dont see any signs or anything saying that they cant so they will be posting signs and possibly gates sometime soon.I just got finished reading the thread again over on AZVJC, and I am split in my thoughts on the matter... For those of us that were out there, there were not any signs, gates or any other indication that the area was closed. Secondly, we've only heard from this "Land Owner" from a post she supposedly sent to Expeditions West Forum.
However, it is on Private Land, and they can do as they please. I think the idea of VJC and other groups helping out by putting up signs is a good one, but at the same time, I feel as though the owner themselves should come and take care of it if they are truly that concerned about it. Just saying its closed, from a computer, out of state is BS in my opinion. But, as Jason stated above, if you want to run the Coke Ovens, I'd do it pretty soon. They are going to close it, however, its not the Jeeps and large vehicles that they are going to have trouble with... During our trip, we passed, and were passed by 50+ quads over the weekend.... Not to mention the dirtbikes...
In my opinion, they should close off the Coke Ovens and homestead, but only those and not the trails surrounding them. People should still be alllowed to view these pieces of history.
Finally, (because I have to leave for work), we spoke directly with BLM, and we were told, if there are no signs, and no indication...then its ok to proceed. Its up to the LAND OWNER to post signs and gates.
