ok i went to the junk yard the other day to get a lid for my center consle .... i saw this under an exploder and just asked how much they wanted .... the girl said she didnt know and asked what i would pay... i told her (lieing) that i could get it at a junk yard in pheonix for $175 and she said that she would take that... Sooo.. instead of getting a $5 center consel lid i got an 8.8... haha It is out of a 1996 ford exploder with 109,000 miles and has 4.10 gears and limited slip. heres what it looked like when i bought it.. (sway bar and ebrake cables came with it.. anyone need them?) i took off all the unnessesary crap then took off the cover and drained the sludge (no metal shavings so im happy heres a picture of the limited slip carrier took out the shafts and brakes and here is how it sits now. Plans.... i will be installing it with the factory limited slip for now but will prolly get a locker in a few months i will be wireing it to keep ABS but putting a toggle on the ABS to turn it off when off road using brackets off of an old d35 regearing front d30 to 4.10s More to come

Looks good buddy, the one i picked up had a limited slip too but the spool was cheap so i went that way instead lol figured it would be easier putting together than the all the piecies for the LS. I'm curious as to what junkyard you found the axle at???

well this project is set back alittle..... Think i need a new t-case (something broke during jason, mine, and lex's "private party") so whenever i do the t-case swap the axle will go in to (that way i dont have to screw with the driveshaft twice)
ill find out the next week or so if it's the t-case... HOPE NOT! haha

not sure yet but i have a gorrible vinratiion and whine.. need to replace the front driveshaft first to make sure its not the problem
i DO know that the viscous coupler in the t-case is toast... so it needs to be replaced anyways

Wow, that axle looks sweet!! My opinion, ABS is for the road and is not as good at stopping a vehicle as an experienced driver with no ABS. But then, I tend to modify brake systems for a little added performance and render the ABS system inoperative. ;D

DJ, WTF is up with wanting to keep ABS??? It will get you killed offroad.....It almost caused me to total my heep back when I was living in CT. (For the record, I was going down a mud-slick hill, in 4lo, and hit the brakes softly to slow down a bit, when i heard a groan, and felt the pedal pulsate. I was gaining speed quickly, and could not modulate the brake to keep my steering. Almost ate a rather large tree, because I could not lock my wheels up and create a wedge of dirt and rock underneath my tires while sliding down said hill.) Anyways, you would have been better off with an open carrier. (ask me how I know.) I'm a cheapo, I will not pay to get a locker installed. I wish I had an open carrier so I could drop a lunchbox locker in it (~$250). The Powertrax No-Slip is the only locker made for an 8.8 L/S carrier. Almost $450! Either way you go, make sure you weld the tubes to the centersection (the pumpkin is cast STEEL, not IRON) because Ford used almost molten steel pins to secure the centersection to the tubes instead of the typical rosette welds (such as Dana axles); unfortunately, the pins are obviously heat treated, but not in a way conducive to their application (They are brittle and single shear). They tend to shear quite easily when push comes to shove. Anyways, if you need any more info on the 8.8, give me a call. (I also have an entire machine shop at my disposal). 520-661-6964 Good luck! Kevin

i was only goin to keep abs for the street because this is my dd and i pull trailers every weekend... i was goin to put a on/off switch so i can turn it off off road.. i hate it off road.... it always pulsates and i lose control.. but oh well... its no longer a problem.... (alteast for now... i hope the insurance doesnt find out...) as for the LS carrier... yes it sucks... but oh well... everyone else wanted 500+ for an 8.8 and i found this one for 175... and it had 4.10's already in it for my 33's... when the time comes ill put the money in a locker of some sort.... but for now LS will work... its not the best but its better than stock. thx for the info though kevin! i maybe be givin u a call someday.... i also may need help if and when i swap in a 231 i was goin to weld the tubes... but i wasnt aware of the way ford welded the tubes in... good info!

got the flange ground down the housing and made it purdy got the brackets ground to fit the bigger tube ... had trouble with 1 bracket... it has a huge gap.. but we'll make it work the rest came out good i used 1 wheel ... it took a beating.. lol.. toward the end it worked better because it acted like a cut off wheel
